A LAMENT AND A PRAYER
As I see the grieving widow and the children cry
There springs unbidden a dampness to my eye.
There is a hardened lump right here in my chest
As I digest the news that yet again we’ve lost one of our best,
And though not related by any close family ties
I feel each loss so deeply as another brave Digger dies.
On the screen I see his mates give a final salute
While the bereaved families say we still must be resolute
For there are many evil men in that foreign land
Who oppose our brave young Aussie band.
Our Diggers just get on with their work
And from the hard fighting they will not shirk.
The words from an old half-forgotten song go through my mind,
The words that Shirley sang I think you’ll find ~
“It’s a horror movie, right there on my TV.”
It was a different war back then, you see,
But you’d still get that empty feeling in the belly
When you’d see we’d lost another Digger, on the telly.
While many Australians feel the pain, and sense the loss,
It is the families that bear the greater cross.
Their kin have more to risk and they have the private pain
When they get the midnight visit from the officer and the chaplain.
Please, I ask my countrymen to give to these folks comfort
And in their distress and sadness give them our support.
In conclusion, I plead with our Lord ~
“Please dear God, give strength to our boys’ symbolic sword.
Help them to stay the course and do their job
To defeat the evil men who freedom, would rob.
Please give comfort to all the kin of the slain
And please Lord, save our people from further pain.”
