6 RAR Mascot
In 1975 the CO of the Battalion ordered the Bn 2IC to obtain a ‘Blue Healer’ as the unofficial Battalion Mascot. The 2IC purchased MA001 PTE Ridgliegh (Blue), for a total of $30. On 28 Oct 76, ‘Blue’ was accidentally run over and the battalion was left without their mascot. In 1978 the next ‘Blue’ was given to 6 RAR by 8/9 RAR during an exercise in Shoalwater Bay as somewhat of a joke given the Battalion did not have a mascot. A wretched old dog was obtained from the local pound by the 8/9 RAR Padre at a cost of $1.50 and promptly named “Wart” by the troops. The dog was left as a surprise gift in the dug-in command post during a relief in place activity. The CO at the time, LTCOL M. Harris, MC, kept the animal and on return to barracks ordered the dog cleaned, wormed and marched in as the Battalion’s mascot. In 1981 a new dog was brought into service with the Battalion “PTE Saltwood Sharaz Jasmine” (alias Blue). There have been seven Australian Cattle dogs in the role of ‘Battalion Friend’ with only the last three being official mascots. The current ‘Blue Dog’ is a healthy male who was born in May 2010, he has been with the Battalion since June 2010. On 29 November 2011, MA505 Private Ridgliegh Blue III was officially registered as the 6 RAR Mascot.
Blue was promoted to the rank of LCPL on 08 April 2013, after successfully completing a Junior Leadership Course with SQLD WONCO.
After a year of hard work and rigorous parade duties, Blue was promoted to the rank of CPL on 20 January 2014.
During his time in the Battalion ‘Blue’ was involved in a number of incidents :
* He was seen on numerous occasions biting various members of the battalion whilst on morning parade
* The duty wheels were often dispatched to recover Blue from other units around Gallipoli Barracks after he gate crashed BBQs and events looking for a free meal and pat
* There have been unconfirmed reports around Blue’s involvement with female dogs from the 2CER EDD Team
* Blue has also been known to use his rank and position in the Battalion to receive free meals at the Boozer
Despite all this, on 19 January 2015 ‘Blue’ was promoted to the rank of SGT.
Blue now spends his days travelling between “Blue Dogs Hut” at the Guard Room, the Battalion Boozer and the Regimental Police Cell.
*SGT Ridgeliegh Blue III is currently under investigation for attacking a subordinate during the 2017 Anzac Day Parade*
